MayDay Goes Green Project’

NPCR - NEIGHBORHOOD-BASED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH POSITION

Program Description:   MayDay Goes Green Project’

In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre (HOBT) is a professional puppet and mask theater that was founded in 1973 by a small group of community artists and it has grown into one of the most highly regarded puppet theaters in the country. MayDay celebrates its 36th anniversary in 2010.  Held on the first Sunday in May, this artistic celebration of spring draws an audience of 50,000 people.  The non-motorized parade follows a mile-long route along Bloomington Avenue in south Minneapolis and concludes with a pageant and festival in Powderhorn Park. The celebration generates a huge amount of garbage at Powderhorn Park and HOBT would like to redirect this waste into recyclable materials by implementing new disposal procedures for the 2010 MayDay event.  A student research assistant is needed to research waste reduction models and develop a waste disposal reduction and recycling plan for the MayDay Parade and Festival.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Investigate recycling options and best practice models at large public events or parks
  • Interview local and national event planners and park managers
  • Prepare a report with recommendations to increase recycling and reduce garbage at HOBT’s annual MayDay Parade and Festival

Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in the areas of arts and the environment
  • A background in theater, visual art or arts administration desired
  • Involvement with environmental projects, particularly reducing, reusing and recycling materials, and experience with outdoor community festivals preferred
